The tooth train and ZachlorouThe rack railway from Diakopto to Kalavryta runs through the forested Voraikos gorge and is the narrowest railway of Europe. After a 40 minutes travel with this surprisingly small train, it stops at the railway station Mega Spileon in the village Zachlorou.
This village with only a 100 inhabitants offers the possibility for a pleasant stroll and see houses built of clay and large stones, the traditional Greek way of construction. It is a 45 minutes trek over hills and through forests to the Monastery Mega Spileon (lit. Big Cave). This interesting monastery is built into a cliff and houses gold and silver relics. It is a 4 hour hike downhill back to Diakofto along the train track. This walk is part of the European Walking Trail E4. Read more about this area. |
