Ancient Greece

Athens, the capital of Greece, where the European society started. Ever since the Olympic Games of 2004, Athens became again one of the most popular cities to go to for a long weekend.

The structural improvement of the infrastructure and the new boulevards between the archaeological sites in the city centre makes this city a pleasure to stay at. By taking big measurements on the traffic, Athens discarded herself from the ‘smog’ blanket.
Of course a visit to the Acropolis is an unforgettable experience, but also the nature in and just outside the city is worth to see. And how to do this intensive and more adventures? By a jeep tour of course.
The ones who have been to Greece will remember the many little Greece churches spread around Greece. Experience painting one icon yourself and discover the ancient old history of the painting and its materials.
Don’t worry about the culinary side of the trip; we are experts in finding for you the greatest and best taverna’s in the area. Athens welcomes you throughout the whole year!

PROGRAMM SUGGESTION

• First day:
  ARRIVAL

  taverne Klimataria in Athene

  Arrival at the airport. It is possible to have a drink at the coach, served by our local agent.
  Dinner in the evening is possible in Psyrri, THE most pleasant area to go out in, in the city centre of Athens.

• Second day:
  PAINTING ICONS

  an icon of Agios Georgios

  The painting takes place at a unique location, only 45 minutes drive from Athens centre, in the middle of the wine fields of Attica.
  An experienced icon painter and – restorer will make a theoretical introduce on the history and the technique of icon painting. After that it is up to you to paint. There are various icons drawn up in different statues so the whole painting process can been seen. A minimum of 6 hours is necessary to get any result and this activity is therefore a day activity.

The lunch will take place in the nearby very traditional taverna (a small museum you could say) where you can taste the atmosphere of the old days. Different Greek specialties are on the menu. In the evening, dinner is possible in an authentic Greek taverna, a block away from the famous Omonia square.

• Third day:
  JEEP RIDE

  getting to know the jeep

  A breathtaking jeep ride over the mountain of Ymittou, a 800m high mountain, visible from every angle. Via a sand road it goes up to 700 meter and from this height you have a fantastic view over whole city of Athens.

After the break with coffee and cake at the well it is downwards from the east side of the mountain. This is where the real adventure begins and where your skills as driver will be tested! A lunch at a traditional taverna with a view on the many olive trees is well deserved. Before returning to the busy city centre you can enjoy the quietness by walking through the monastery of Af. Bethlem. You will get to know a little about the lives of the nuns and you will visit the very nice painted church. At the end of the day you dinner in old Greece atmosphere. In this restaurant the menu is based on what Homerus just to cook in old Greece. In the food you will find semi-tropical fruits, pulse and soft goat cheeses. There are also meat and fish dishes. The most special about this restaurant is that you will eat only with a knife and a spoon! A dinner which you will not forget easily!

• Forth day:
  CITY TOUR

  visit at the Acropolis

  The city tour takes the group along the most important places of the centre of Athens like the Olympic Stadium, the Parliament building, the Neo classical buildings of the university, the conservatory and the library. The biggest highlight, literally and figurative, is of course the Acropolis with is world famous temple of Parthenon and the Erechthion.

  1002 nights

  During the free afternoon you can stroll through Plaka, the old city centre of Athens and explore by yourself the picturesque roads.
  To end this perfect trip the group will dinner in the restaurant 1002 nights. An Eastern restaurant where a belly dancer should not be left out.
  

• Fifth day:
  DEPARTURE

  Transfer to the airport of Athens for the departure. Depending on the departure time of the flight, it is possible to organize a small activity in the morning, for example a visit to a wine farm in the surroundings of the airport.

  Here a real wine expert will tell you the secrets of good wine making. He/ She will show you the production room and of course the wine cellar. In the cellar a wine taste will take place. With a small snack the group will taste a little of the red, the white and the rose wine. In the shop of the wine farm it is possible to buy a bottle of wine, so at home you can return again back to the Greek atmosphere while going through the pictures.
